USA Healthcare is "Sicko" and we need to fix it now!

I will preface this with a note, this rant is not Macintosh related. That being said, it does affect millions of Mac users. It's a rant about healthcare, or rather "health-don't-care". As a self employed individual, health care insurance is a huge expense. And as someone recently diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, I've found that most health insurance companies just don't want me. No matter that my diabetes is completely under control and that I've lost 40 pounds and can pretty much control my condition with diet and exercise!

I just watched Michael Moore's Sicko movie. It reinforced everything that I knew was wrong with health care in the USA. Being British born, I know about the UK's National Health Service. Being the son of a Scottish doctor - a family practitioner or "GP" in UK parlance - I know that their "free" healthcare system works. And that doctors still do housecalls. Of course there are quirks, sometimes you do need to wait to see a specialist - but not that much worse than here in our paid system - even in the ER you seem to wait and wait for a specilaist to see you. Of course nothing is free, socialized medicine is paid for out of taxes. But that means that unemployed people are covered just like employed people. And you know, if you have ever been unemployed, that it's the worst time not to have health insurance and not having money to pay for it. I started MacTalent partly because I had previously spent a year unemployed and it was scary, and I wanted a way for employers and prospective employees to meet without it costing an arm and a leg. And that was 15 years ago when health insurance was not anything like as expensive as it is now.

Our politicians, in cahoots with insurance and pharmaceutical companies, would have you believe that our system is superior to the socialized medicine that our Canadian neighbors to the north have to put up with. It's baloney! Moore's Sicko movie shows that the citizens of France, UK, Norway and Canada enjoy a much better healthcare system than we do. I personally utilized universal healthcare in Australia when I lived there, and it works! One Sicko statistic you should not miss. In this country, over 30% of every health care dollar does NOT go towards health "care" - it goes to insurance companies, the staff that doctors have to employ to handle paperwork to be reimbursed by insurance, that employers have to pay to administer their employees health plans etc. etc. Not to mention that our system leaves itself wide open to fraud.

At this time I am not sure quite what to do. But hopefully writing this column is something. If it spreads the word about the movie, then you can visit Moore's website and learn how to join the fight for universal health care. It's a huge fight, there are many people and companies with huge budgets to protect their vested interests. But we can do it. We can change things.
